Zombie traffic tickets can catch up with you at any time

“I got a ticket in 1998. I don’t even remember getting it, but now I’m being told my licensed has been suspended since then.”

This is becoming a common story lately. Traffic tickets never truly die, and can hide away in old files until they are awakened again. Apparently, people at the DMV for New York have been scouring old records, suspending licenses, and demanding payment. The truth is that fines come only after being found guilty after trial or as a plea. Everyone has the right to a day in court, even for a traffic ticket.

Prosecuting these zombie tickets can be complicated. Someone who is found guilty are subject to the fines and points that were in effect back when the ticket was written in the first place. Due to their age, it’s possible that the officer who wrote the traffic ticket is no longer even available to testify, should there be a trial.

The role of a traffic ticket defense attorney is to make sure that, if a hoard of zombie tickets does catch up with you, that your rights are protected and you get the best outcome possible. If you just found out about a zombie ticket, or you have a more recent traffic ticket, give me a call or upload your traffic ticket for a free consultation.
